Cartagena de Indias - Colombia
Wonderful city in the Colombian Caribbean, founded in 1533, by
a beautiful bay, fundamental factor of its prosperity due to its
incomparable port. The beauty of its Colonial and Republican style
architecture and the imposing fortification system which defended the
city in the past, made UNESCO appoint the city “Cultural and Historical
Heritage of Mankind”.
Also, in 2007, Cartagena will be the site of the World
Tourism Organization annual meeting.
Besides the historic center, which keeps invaluable
buildings constructed starting the XVI Century, the city
offers and insular area conformed by the Island of Barú
and the Rosario Islands , enchanted places with beautiful
coves and white sand beaches.
Cartagena´s gastronomy is very rich and varied,
with a strong tropical flavor. Its coconut pastry is
outstanding. Its folklore is a fusion of heritages from
the three cultures which inhabited Cartagena in colonial times:
Europe, Africa and America , which are today present in their
dances, music and festivities.
